Building a Stapler - Anvil

Posted on August 31st, 2008 in Design Tutorial, Models, Sheet Metal, SolidWorks, Stapler by The SW Geek

On Friday, I went over the procedure for creating the forming tool for the stapler anvil. Today, as a special Sunday post, I will go over the rest of the anvil. The anvil will be made as a sheet metal component so we can use the forming tool that was created on Friday.

Help Fellow Users and Win a SolidWorks 2009 Bible

Posted on August 31st, 2008 in Community, Contest, SolidWorks by admin

A few months ago I started a community site for other SolidWorks users to share tips and tricks and to encourage everyone help each other out. The site, SolidWorks Geeks, has seen an increase in membership in the past couple of weeks but I know the site can be even bigger. I know in time, SolidWorks Geeks has the potential to be the biggest community of SolidWorks users on the internets but I think it needs a little push in the right direction. How are we going to do that? Bribery!

Building a Stapler - Anvil Forming Tool

Posted on August 29th, 2008 in Design Tutorial, Models, Sheet Metal, SolidWorks, Stapler by The SW Geek

Here we are at the beginning of another beautiful Friday morning and of course you know what that means…this weeks modeling tutorial.  Last month when I started the stapler project, I thought it would be fun to model up the stapler sitting on my desk. I never expected it to attract the attention it has but it now seems to be the most popular series of The SolidWorks Geek. Your comments and questions are all great and please keep them coming. Due to the number of steps required to create the models illustrated in this series, I am constantly experimenting with the way I present the information. I try to balance the amount of information with the size of the post. From time to time, I may not spend as much time on a particular step but your comments and questions fill any gaps I may have left. So thank you, my photo may be the one shown above but this blog is yours.

Adding a Library Feature to a Part

Posted on August 25th, 2008 in Design Library, Models, Productivity, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

Now that we added a feature to the Design Library, we can now add it to a new part. Adding features from the Design Library are as easy as drag-and-drop, so easy even an AutoCAD user can do it ( I Kid).  There are two types of features you will drop into a part; features with references and without references. Today we are going to concentrate on inserting features without references.

Add Features to the Design Library

Posted on August 25th, 2008 in Customize, Design Library, Productivity, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

Here we are at the beginning of another fine week in the blogosphere. I hope each and every one of you had a great weekend. I also hope you got some rest because I have tons of tips and tricks to throw your way this week. Today we will start with our continuing exploration of the benefits of using the Design Library. In the past we explored such topics as creating a notes library, adding forming tools and adding components to the library with Mate references. If you missed any of these post you can go here to find them all: http://www.theswgeek.com/tag/design-library/. Today we are going to cover adding your most commonly used features to the design library to speed up your design process.

Chat with the Geek

Posted on August 24th, 2008 in Misc by admin

Who Wants to Chat? Earlier this week, I was able to help out a user when he caught me on Gtalk and afterwards I thought I should do it more often. It was so nice to be able to give quick answers and get a quick response. I felt he walked away from the conversation with a lot more information then he would have gotten through the comments or even email. So, as an experiment, I added a chat client to the SolidWorks Site; http://www.theswgeek.com/chat-with-the-geek/ .

I will see how the chat room goes for a couple of weeks. If I find it’s more trouble then it’s worth, I will take it down. When you get a chance swing by and say “hi”. I would love to get to know more of my readers.

Standards Wednesday - General Tolerancing Pt2

Posted on August 20th, 2008 in Dimensions, Drawings, Standards by admin

Last week I started covering Section 2 of ASME Y14.5-1994, General Tolerancing and Related Principles, with the post Standards Wednesday - General Tolerancing Pt1. This week we will continue to explore this section of the ASME Y14.5 with Section 2.3, Tolerance Expression; Section 2.4, Interpretation of Limits and Section 2.5, Single Limits. Section 2 is a pretty hefty section and it will take us a few weeks to go through but we really need to cover it before we move on to GD&T.

Design Faster with Design Library and Mate References Pt2

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in Assemblies, Design Library, Mates, Productivity, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

In Design Faster with Design Library and Mate References Pt1, I described the process for creating components with Mate References to be used in the Design Library. The Design Library is a great place to store assembly components you use most often in order to streamline the assembly process for new assemblies. This example will illustrate the process for creating a new assembly quickly and easily from Design Library components.

Design Faster with Design Library and Mate References Pt1

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in Design Library, Mates, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

Last week, I spoke briefly about the benefits of using the Design library in Why Do I Need to Use the Design Library? . As promised, this week I will show you my favorite way of using the Design Library. Adding frequently used components, with Mate References, to the Design Library allows you to build assemblies faster then you ever imagined. The steps illustrated today may seem like a lot but a few extra minutes when setting up your library components can save you hours in the long run.

Become a Part of a Community

Posted on August 16th, 2008 in Misc by admin

Prior to starting The SolidWorks Geek, I created a community for other SolidWorks Geeks. Since Working  on The SolidWorks Geek blog, I have not been actively promoting the community. Now that needs to change… SolidWorks Geeks is a community based site that I hope will grow and provide an area for other SolidWorks users to share advise, tips and tricks related to SolidWorks. Think of it as a online version of a SolidWorks Users group.
