SolidWorks Labs – New Look and New Application
Dec 12th, 2008 | By Alex R. Ruiz | Category: Applications, Featured ArticlesLast Week, I introduced many of you to The SolidWorks Labs site when I wrote about the application Treehouse. Today there have been some changes over at SolidWorks Labs. The people over there have been busy creating a new look to the site and they even had time to add a new cool application. Today we are going to take a quick look at both of them.
Updated Look!
If you have been to the SolidWorks Labs site in the past, you will notice a big change in the look and feel of the site. I must say, I really like the new look of the site.

Each of the available applications are easily accessible from the toolbar at the bottom of the page.

When you click the button, you will get a brief description of the app and something new… a quick video detailing how to use the application.

Click the Read more link for more including the link to download.

A cool new feature of the site is the ability to post your own reviews about the product for other users to read. I definitely plan to take advantage of this feature in the future.

When you are ready to download the application, just click the Download link. Like a mentioned, today SolidWorks Lab released a new program called Tagger. So while your at the site make sure you download it.

A New Way To Add Tags
Some users might not be aware of it, but in 2008 Tags were added to SolidWorks. If you are familiar with common Web 2.0 sites such as Flickr , Delicious and The SolidWorks Geek, you know that tags can be very useful in finding information using keywords. In SolidWorks, tags can be added to features, parts, drawings and assemblies to aid in filtering and searching. Prior to Tagger, tags can be added from the tags dialog available on the status bar of SolidWorks.

Once you install Tagger, a new tab is added to the Task Pane.

In this new tab you can add new tags and view tags that are already available. The first time you run Tagger you will be prompted to Add a new tag unless the part you open already has tags.

To add a tag, just type in the field labeled Add a new tag.

When you add tags, they will automatically be marked as a Favorite designated with a star. If you do not want the tag to show up in other documents as a favorite, deselect the star next to the name.

For this example, I have already created favorite tags that are available in all documents. Now I want to assign one of the favorites to this assembly. First select the assembly in the FeatureManager…

…and select the tag icon next to the description. If a new tag is needed, just type it in the available field.

To see the items tagged in a document, select the tag in the Tagger window and the items will be highlighted.

Explore for yourself…
This was just a quick introduction to the new Tagger application available at SolidWorks Labs. Make sure you checkout the short video tutorial available on the site for more information.
