Adding a Library Feature to a Part

Posted on August 25th, 2008 in Design Library, Models, Productivity, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

Now that we added a feature to the Design Library, we can now add it to a new part. Adding features from the Design Library are as easy as drag-and-drop, so easy even an AutoCAD user can do it ( I Kid).  There are two types of features you will drop into a part; features with references and without references. Today we are going to concentrate on inserting features without references.

Add Features to the Design Library

Posted on August 25th, 2008 in Customize, Design Library, Productivity, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

Here we are at the beginning of another fine week in the blogosphere. I hope each and every one of you had a great weekend. I also hope you got some rest because I have tons of tips and tricks to throw your way this week. Today we will start with our continuing exploration of the benefits of using the Design Library. In the past we explored such topics as creating a notes library, adding forming tools and adding components to the library with Mate references. If you missed any of these post you can go here to find them all: http://www.theswgeek.com/tag/design-library/. Today we are going to cover adding your most commonly used features to the design library to speed up your design process.

Design Faster with Design Library and Mate References Pt2

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in Assemblies, Design Library, Mates, Productivity, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

In Design Faster with Design Library and Mate References Pt1, I described the process for creating components with Mate References to be used in the Design Library. The Design Library is a great place to store assembly components you use most often in order to streamline the assembly process for new assemblies. This example will illustrate the process for creating a new assembly quickly and easily from Design Library components.

Design Faster with Design Library and Mate References Pt1

Posted on August 18th, 2008 in Design Library, Mates, SolidWorks by The SW Geek

Last week, I spoke briefly about the benefits of using the Design library in Why Do I Need to Use the Design Library? . As promised, this week I will show you my favorite way of using the Design Library. Adding frequently used components, with Mate References, to the Design Library allows you to build assemblies faster then you ever imagined. The steps illustrated today may seem like a lot but a few extra minutes when setting up your library components can save you hours in the long run.

Why Do I Need to Use the Design Library?

Posted on August 11th, 2008 in Design Library, SolidWorks, System Options, User Interface by The SW Geek

Today’s post is a perfect example of a reader’s question having a direct affect on the content of the site. Earlier last week, I had a brief email exchange with a reader regarding the merits of the Design Library. The Design Library is a subset of folders, available in the Design Library tab in the Task Pane, that is used to store reusable items like models, blocks & annotations. In the past, I touched briefly on the Design Library in famous posts such as All These Notes and No Where to Put Them and Building a stapler - Arm Bracket (Forming Tools) but today we go over the various uses for the Design Library.

Building a stapler - Arm Bracket (Forming Tools)

Posted on August 8th, 2008 in Design Library, Design Tutorial, Models, SolidWorks, Stapler by The SW Geek

After missing a week, I am finally back with a new design tutorial. Two weeks ago we started building a stapler with the first part of the assembly, the base. This week, I will be building the arm bracket which is a simple sheet metal component. After today, you will be able to make a simple sheet metal part and a simple forming tool. A forming tool is used like a die to bend, shape and form sheet metal. The arm bracket and the two forming tools, we will be using, can be downloaded here: Arm Bracket, Stapler (304).

All These Notes and No Where to Put Them

Posted on June 6th, 2008 in Customize, Design Library, Drawings, SolidWorks, Standards, User Interface by The SW Geek

In the previous two weeks for Standards Tuesday I spoke about the proper way to create drawing notes, see Standards Tuesday - Drawing Notes and Standards Tuesday - Drawing Notes Pt2. Now I admit that it could be a bit overwhelming and a lot of information to remember but it doesn’t have to be that way. Wouldn’t it be great if you could create a library of all you most common drawing notes that you can just add to drawings and make only small changes as required. Using the Design Library that is already installed on your system is a great way to create a Notes Library.
